What is Malware?
Malicious software — viruses, trojans, ransomware, spyware — designed to damage, disrupt, or gain unauthorized access to systems.
Malware is the catch-all term for malicious software: viruses, trojans, worms, ransomware, spyware, keyloggers, and the loaders and droppers that deliver them. Modern malware is rarely the noisy, obvious infection of a decade ago; much of it is designed to stay quiet, steal credentials, and hand control to an attacker who then operates by hand. This is why traditional signature-based antivirus is no longer enough on its own — behaviour-based tools like EDR look at what software actually does, not just whether it matches a known bad file. Catching malware early, before it leads to data theft or ransomware, is the core job of endpoint detection and response.

Maliciel est le terme générique désignant un logiciel malveillant : virus, chevaux de Troie, vers, rançongiciels, logiciels espions, enregistreurs de frappe, ainsi que les chargeurs qui les diffusent. Le maliciel moderne est rarement l'infection bruyante et évidente d'autrefois; une grande partie est conçue pour rester discrète, voler des identifiants et remettre le contrôle à un attaquant. C'est pourquoi l'antivirus traditionnel fondé sur les signatures ne suffit plus à lui seul — les outils comportementaux comme l'EDR observent ce que le logiciel fait réellement. Détecter un maliciel tôt, avant le vol de données ou le rançongiciel, est la tâche centrale de la détection et réponse sur les terminaux.
